8 Albert Embankment, London
Smith Jenkins provided expert heritage advice to the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to support the transformation of its Grade II listed 8 Albert Embankment into its new headquarters.
Constructed in the 1930s as the LFB’s headquarters, the building holds a significant place in the organisation’s history. The project seeks to return the Brigade to its historic home, delivering a modern fire station and central headquarters alongside a new museum and community spaces.
A detailed understanding of the building’s historic and architectural significance was central to the project, informing a sensitive approach to change within this monumental structure. Working closely with the client, 5plus Architects and the wider consultant team, Smith Jenkins provided specialist heritage advice to help shape a high-quality scheme that respects the building’s heritage while adapting it to meet the operational needs of a modern fire and rescue service.
Planning permission and listed building consent were granted in October 2026. Smith Jenkins continues to advise the project team through the delivery phase, helping to ensure that the building’s special architectural and historic interest is respected as it returns to active use as the LFB’s headquarters.
