Mike Fox
Associate
Mike is an Associate in the Heritage Team. He has considerable experience in assessing heritage significance and the impact of development proposals, having worked within both local authority and architectural conservation charity environments.
Prior to Smith Jenkins, Mike was lead conservation officer for the London Borough of Waltham Forest, where he worked on a wide variety of heritage and planning projects, ranging from individual householder applications to major masterplans and planning submissions.
Notable recent projects include the award-winning revitalisation of the borough’s Grade II listed Town Hall alongside the creation of 400 new residential units; a sensitive contemporary extension to a Grade II* listed church in Walthamstow Village, providing much needed new facilities; and the landmark restoration and conversion of a Grade II* listed former cinema into a new theatre space, resulting in the building being removed from the Heritage At Risk Register. Mike also led the comprehensive refresh of the borough’s Local Heritage List, making it more engaging and accessible for users, and more representative of the borough’s diversity.
Mike is a strong advocate for the creative reuse of heritage assets and works hard to find practical solutions that ensure significance is preserved and enhanced. Having worked in a local authority context he has direct experience of the assessment and decision-making processes, giving him valuable insights for heritage consultancy.
